Birding & Botany in Cali’s Cloudforest
Immerse Yourself in Cali’s Breathtaking Nature on an Unforgettable Eco-Tour!
Get ready for an extraordinary early-morning nature adventure just outside Cali, where you’ll explore two remarkable reserves along the Carretera al Mar: KM18 and El Refugio, located about 60 minutes from the city in the cloud forests of the Western Cordillera—one of the most biodiverse regions in the Andes.
We depart early from Cali, when the forest is most alive and birds are at their peak activity. Our first stop takes us to the rural village of La Elvira, near KM18, a legendary birdwatching area surrounded by dense cloud forest. Here, the experience is dynamic and immersive, with many bird species flying just a few meters away, creating unforgettable opportunities for observation and photography. The morning focuses on strategically placed feeding stations, where vibrant species such as toucans, tanagers, motmots, hummingbirds, and trogons regularly gather. With the guidance of an expert naturalist, you’ll learn to identify both endemic and migratory birds, including the Chestnut Wood Quail, Andean Motmot, Colombian Chachalaca, and Canada Warbler, all while the forest comes alive with sound.
Our second stop brings us to El Refugio Natural Reserve, a 14-hectare private sanctuary dedicated to conservation since 1978. This hidden gem blends primary and secondary cloud forest with carefully maintained botanical gardens, surrounded by some of the most important tree species of the Andes, including Colombia’s national tree, the iconic wax palm. Guided by Dr. Eduardo, a passionate botanist and conservationist, you’ll walk through trails rich in orchids, bromeliads, heliconias, Andean blueberries, palms, ferns, and native trees, while learning about the ecological importance of this unique ecosystem. The reserve also shelters a variety of wildlife—armadillos, agoutis, reptiles, insects, and occasional snakes—making every step feel like a true exploration of the forest.
This tour is ideal for bird lovers, nature enthusiasts, and adventurous travelers seeking an authentic experience in Colombia’s cloud forests. An early start, close wildlife encounters, and deep immersion in biodiversity make this a one-of-a-kind day tour from Cali.
