Paramo de las Dominguez: Tenerife and Laguna Negra Full-Day Hike
Elevate your adventure in Tenerife with a high-altitude hike through the Páramo de Las Domínguez, leading to the legendary Laguna Negra, deep in the Páramo de Las Hermosas of Colombia’s Central Cordillera.
This demanding Andean journey takes you into one of the country’s most remote and pristine high-mountain ecosystems. As you ascend, the landscape transforms dramatically—from rolling grasslands and peat bogs to wide-open páramo plains shaped by wind, cold, and time. From the trail, you’ll enjoy sweeping panoramic views over Tenerife and the surrounding valleys, where steep mountain ridges contrast sharply with lush green lowlands far below.
The route crosses classic páramo terrain: soft, sponge-like soils that store water, rocky sections, exposed ridgelines, and open highlands dotted with frailejones, the iconic plants of the Andes that grow nowhere else on Earth. Wildlife sightings may include Andean birds adapted to extreme elevations and signs of mammals that roam these protected highlands.
Reaching Laguna Negra, a dark, cold glacial lake set against vast open skies, is the highlight of the adventure. Sitting at approximately 3,800 meters above sea level, the lagoon feels raw, silent, and powerful—a place where weather can shift quickly, clouds roll in fast, and the scale of the Andes becomes truly humbling.
This is a high-altitude, physically demanding hike, ideal for hikers in good condition who are seeking challenge, solitude, and a deep connection with nature. More than just a trek, this experience offers personal achievement, immersion in one of Colombia’s most important water-producing ecosystems, and a rare opportunity to explore the wild heart of the Andes.
An unforgettable adventure for those ready to step beyond the ordinary and into Colombia’s high-mountain wilderness.
