Explore the Río Bravo Canyon Natural Reserve: Hike, Waterfalls & Lake Calima

Join our Nature and Wildlife Tour and explore the stunning Río Bravo Canyon Natural Reserve, a paradise of waterfalls, cloud forests, and wildlife located just a scenic 2-hour drive from Cali, Colombia.

We set off early from Cali, chasing the first light as we cross the fertile Valle del Cauca, where endless sugarcane fields, fruit farms, and rural landscapes stretch across one of Colombia’s most productive regions. As the road climbs, the valley falls away behind us, revealing wide Andean panoramas and a dramatic transition from farmland to mountain wilderness.

The ascent into the Calima–Darién region brings cooler air, winding roads, and sweeping viewpoints over the surrounding cordilleras. We pause for a traditional local breakfast before continuing deeper into the mountains—fueling up for the adventure ahead.

Before entering the canyon, we stop at Calima Lake (Calima Reservoir), an immense body of water surrounded by rolling hills and constant winds. From this viewpoint, you’ll learn how this massive dam powers the region while taking in one of the most impressive freshwater landscapes in western Colombia.

From here, the journey turns wild as we descend into the Río Bravo Canyon. Towering trees, misty slopes, and dense forest close in around the trail, creating a raw, immersive jungle atmosphere. The path leads past cascading waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, and mineral-rich riverbanks where blue Morpho butterflies and countless other species gather in dazzling displays of color and movement.

The adventure includes visits to 5–6 waterfalls across two private nature reserves. At En el Paraíso, you’ll explore jungle trails connecting multiple waterfalls and natural pools—perfect for swimming, cooling off, and soaking in the forest energy. The second reserve, Finca Betania, features the most powerful waterfall in the region, plunging into icy, crystal-clear Andean waters—an unforgettable highlight for swimming and photography.

Río Bravo is a true biodiversity stronghold, home to hundreds of bird species and an astonishing range of wildlife. The forest shelters howler monkeys, agoutis, reptiles, amphibians, and rare birds, making every step feel like a live documentary unfolding around you.

To close the day, we visit the rural town of Darién, where you’ll experience authentic Colombian coffee culture and connect with local families who live closely tied to the land. Walking through quiet streets and local markets, you’ll discover fresh crops harvested that same morning and learn about traditional fruits, plants, and their cultural uses.

This is not just a tour—it’s a full-day adventure combining waterfalls, wildlife, remote landscapes, and local culture, offering a deep immersion into the wild heart of Calima–Darién and the Río Bravo Canyon.
