Paramillo del Quindio Trekking – 3 days - 2 nights
Explore high-altitude Andean landscapes, from cloud forests to páramo ecosystems, on an unforgettable multi-day trekking adventure.
Take on one of Colombia's most spectacular high-altitude adventures with our Paramillo del Quindío Trek, a three-day expedition through the breathtaking landscapes of Los Nevados National Natural Park. Designed for experienced hikers, this journey combines physical challenge, extraordinary scenery, and a deep connection with one of the country's most pristine mountain ecosystems.
The adventure begins in the iconic Cocora Valley and gradually climbs through towering wax palm forests, lush cloud forests, crystal-clear streams, and the unique páramo ecosystem before reaching the summit of Paramillo del Quindío, standing at 4,750 meters (15,584 ft). Along the way, every change in elevation reveals a new landscape, from vibrant green valleys to the golden and ochre tones that make this mountain one of the most distinctive peaks in the Colombian Andes.
More than just a hike, this route follows historic mountain trails once used by Indigenous communities and later by early settlers crossing the Central Andes. These ancient paths connected regions long before modern roads existed, adding a rich cultural dimension to an already unforgettable adventure.
As you gain altitude, you'll enter one of Colombia's most important water-producing ecosystems. The surrounding wetlands and páramo vegetation, including the iconic frailejones, supply water to much of the Coffee Region and support an incredible diversity of wildlife. Keep your eyes open for native birds and other high-altitude species that call these mountains home.
Reaching the summit is both a physical accomplishment and an unforgettable reward. On clear days, you'll be treated to sweeping panoramic views of Los Nevados National Natural Park, including the majestic Nevado del Tolima and the endless mountain ranges stretching across the Central Andes.
Whether you're looking to test your endurance, experience Colombia's extraordinary biodiversity, or simply immerse yourself in the solitude of the high mountains, the Paramillo del Quindío Trek offers an adventure unlike any other.

Route Information
Paramillo del Quindío can be accessed through several authorized routes within Los Nevados National Natural Park. The exact itinerary is selected based on weather, trail conditions, park regulations, and guide recommendations. Regardless of the route, every trek is designed to provide a safe, rewarding, and unforgettable high-altitude experience.
The itinerary below is an example of a typical Paramillo del Quindío trek. The exact route, accommodations, hiking distances, and daily schedule may vary depending on weather conditions, trail conditions, park regulations, and operational logistics. Your guide will select the most appropriate itinerary to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Day 1 – Cocora Valley to La Primavera Mountain Refuge
Distance: Approximately 18 km
Our adventure begins in the colorful town of Salento, where we'll enjoy a traditional Colombian breakfast before transferring to the famous Cocora Valley.
The hike starts among the world's tallest wax palms before entering the lush cloud forest, where moss-covered trees, mountain streams, and rich biodiversity surround the trail. As we continue climbing, the vegetation gradually changes until we reach the open páramo ecosystem.
After enjoying a packed lunch surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery, we continue ascending toward La Primavera Mountain Refuge, located at approximately 3,750 meters (12,300 ft). After 6 to 8 hours of hiking, we'll settle into the refuge, enjoy dinner, and rest in preparation for summit day.
Day 2 – Summit Attempt: Paramillo del Quindío
Distance: Approximately 16 km
We begin before sunrise with a hearty mountain breakfast. On clear mornings, the impressive Nevado del Tolima can often be seen in the distance.
Today's route crosses the high-altitude páramo, passing wetlands and fragile ecosystems that support an incredible variety of native wildlife. The gradual but demanding climb leads us toward the summit of Paramillo del Quindío, where panoramic views reveal some of the highest peaks of Los Nevados National Natural Park.
After spending time at the summit and enjoying our packed lunch, we descend along the same trail back to La Primavera Refuge for a well-deserved evening of rest.
Optional Circuit Route
For hikers seeking a different experience, we also offer a circuit option. After reaching the summit, the descent follows a different trail toward Finca Buenos Aires, creating a complete loop instead of returning by the same route. This variation offers new scenery and makes the final day's hike shorter and more comfortable.
Día 3: Finca La Primavera – Valle de Cocora (2.400 m) – 18 km aprox.
Our final day begins early with a delicious traditional Colombian breakfast at the mountain farmhouse. We then begin our descent through the breathtaking páramo ecosystem, taking in the peaceful atmosphere and spectacular high-altitude landscapes one last time.
The trail is approximately 80% downhill, making it easier on the lungs but more demanding on the knees, so a steady pace is recommended. Along the way, you'll pass Estrella de Agua Farm before arriving back in Cocora Valley, where a traditional Willys Jeep will be waiting to take us back to Salento.
To conclude this unforgettable adventure, we'll enjoy a traditional Colombian lunch together, celebrating an incredible three-day journey through the heart of Los Nevados National Natural Park.
